The Division of Rheumatology offers 4-week (and occasional 2-week) clinical electives consisting of outpatient rheumatology clinics and inpatient rheumatology consultation service at one of our two hospital sites (St. Paul’s Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital). All post-graduate electives arranged for any location within the province of British Columbia by out-of-province medical residents must be finalized through the Postgraduate Dean’s office.
PROCEDURE:
1. Check for Availability from Rheumatology
The resident is responsible for contacting the Program Assistant, Lourdes Gonzalez Arreola, to check availability for visiting electives. We recommend you contact us as early as possible before the academic year begins each July, in order to have access to the most options. Please email her with your program name, your PGY, your preferred site (St. Paul’s Hospital or Vancouver General Hospital) and all possible dates, to UBCRheum.Admin@ubc.ca
Once availability has been confirmed by us, we will email you a Confirmation of Elective, with a preceptor named.
2. Complete an Application to UBC
Once elective dates have been confirmed and approved by the Program and the preceptor is confirmed, the resident must complete their application to UBC Postgraduate Dean’s office a MINIMUM of 8 weeks in advance of the elective start date. All instructions, applications, timelines, fees, and eligibility details can be found on the UBC Postgraduate website here:

3. Register with the BC College of Physicians
ALL ELECTIVE RESIDENTS MUST REGISTER WITH THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA PRIOR TO COMMENCING THEIR ELECTIVE. Information can be found on the above UBC Postgraduate Medicine link.
